The Air Flow
Monitor (AFM) uses ultrasonic technology
to measure air velocity. The unit
consists of a single transmitter and
four receivers. Air velocity and
direction are calculated from
measurements of the phase shifts from
the ultrasonic signals at the receivers.
The sensor is compact, contains no
moving parts and requires no routine
maintenance. It is unaffected by
interruptions from passing vehicles and
acoustic reflections within the tunnel.
The Air Flow Monitor is designed as a
stand-alone sensor.
